1. Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Evalyn Boyd Hines, I’m a non-objective painter.

2. Why art?
Art is my way of releasing my feelings and sharing them with others.

3. What is your earliest memory of wanting to be an artist?
The earliest memory I have of making art was when I was about five years old. I was drawing on a piece of paper when our wood heating stove started a fire around the chimney. Mother told me to take my little brother outside. I took my drawing outside first, then went back to get my brother. We were lucky it was a small fire and my parents were able to put it out before doing much damage.

4. What are your favorite subject(s) and media(s)?
From a very early age I was drawn to making art. Growing up on a farm in rural Arkansas. I was always aware of the beauty that I saw around me. I was fascinated with the color and patterns used by my mother in her patchwork quilts, and the beautiful flowers she planted alongside our vegetable garden.

5. How do you work and approach your subject?
I approach my art the same way I approach everything in my life… with urgency. I act and react to my paintings, working with shapes and color until I’m satisfied with the balance of the piece. I enjoy using acrylic paint because it allows me to work quickly.

6. What are your favorite art work(s), artist(s)?
I love all art that moves me. Some of my favorite artists are Vincent Van Gogh, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, the list could go on and on.

7. What are the best responses you have had to your work?
I think the best response to my work was when a dear friend and fellow artist was looking at one of my paintings and started crying. She told me that the colors moved her to tears.

8. What do you like about your work?
What I like most about my work is going into my studio, picking up a tube of paint, looking at a perfect white surface and smothering it with color.

9. What advice would you give to other artists?
The only advice I can give to other artist is to paint what is inside you and to enjoy what you do.

10. Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?
In five to ten years I see myself still painting and sharing.
