Interview with Carlos Alberto Serrano Rolo —

1. Who are you and what do you do?
I am Carlos Alberto Serrano Rolo, born on May 10, 1963, in Lisbon. I came to live in Queluz when I was just 3 years old. I’m a photographer by passion, it’s the accumulation of all my experiences, it’s the courage that makes me act and decide, and it’s the sensitivity that makes me love and appreciate everything I do. I could say that it is the sum of all this. I’m an appreciator of life… I’m a fighter.

2. Why art?
It’s a passion, especially for photography in general.
My passion is to reach further, reach more people, and become an increasingly better photographer.
Photography has always been a project and emerged with the passion of capturing moments, emotions, and feelings, as therapy, in other words, it is an art that completes me, but at the same time a process that is in a growth phase.

3. What is your first memory of wanting to be an artist?
When I held my first exhibition, at the invitation of IEMAC, at Palácio Conde de Magalhães, on the theme – “Azores – São Miguel,” I noticed that people admired and praised my works.

4. What are your favorite subjects and media?
My favorite subjects are without a doubt everything related to photography, and especially the world of Fashion. I also cannot forget that we live in a world where there is a lot of poverty and precariousness and as a human being, these are issues that make me sensitive.

5. How do you work and approach your subject?
I take my camera and record moments that exist around me, such as Fashion, nature and society, and through my art I show the world everything that is happening.

6. What are your favorite works of art, and artist(s)?
I love photographing faces, because I can, through photography, enter the soul of each person; My reference photographer is Joel Santos. I love fashion, more precisely haute couture shows, like Fátima Lopes; Carlos Gil and Nuno Gama, as well as Debbie Kamakosa (Carla Cristal) and Ana de Sá. Not forgetting great models like Carla Cristal and Zirca Silva, among many others.

7. What are the best responses you’ve had to your work?
The best responses to my work have been in the reactions and sincere opinions of people who visit my social media pages; at exhibitions and previews of theater plays, and especially at fashion shows, such as Fátima Lopes, for which I received invitations to be present to carry out the photo report.

8. What do you like about your job?
Through my photographs, without becoming presumptuous, I help some people to see life differently, and to believe in themselves a little.

9. What advice would you give to other artists?
Don’t give up on your dreams, believe and fight with courage until they come true because through art we can go very far.

10. Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
I see myself as a photographer recognized nationally and internationally in the world of Fashion, and in photography in general, more technically evolved, and having fulfilled all possible dreams.
The basis is to never give up and stop dreaming.
