Gordon Holden — ARTIST
Interview with the artist Gordon Holden —
1. Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Gordon Holden and I am a conceptual artist and designer working on a brand called Consume Cool.
2. Why art?
Because it is exciting and challenging. The meaning of art is forever changing, and because everything through the scope of art seems a little bit more.
3. What is your earliest memory of wanting to be an artist?
During the mid aughts when I was in college. So not too long ago. I never thought about art in a literal way. I have always pursued things in more of an intuitive manner as opposed to being more logical. I think If I were more logical in my decision making I would have pursued something more economically practical like being a lawyer or or a engineer. I guess in the long run it’s all about finding a balance.
4. What are your favorite subject(s) and media(s)?
Digital media, popular culture and our growing infatuation with it. I like to create products and content based around what we are inundated with everyday. So each creation tends to have an ephemeral aspect to it. It’s nice to not think too much about the work once it is finished and move on to the next creation.
5. How do you work and approach your subject?
That’s a funny question to answer because for me it changes frequently. But everything in hindsight has something to teach us about our own approach. I think it has to start with inspiration. If you’re not inspired it’s impossible to get anything done and to keep moving forward. The hardest thing for art lovers to understand is that art emerges from a practice and the practice is what is to be understood. Not the individual art work.
6. What are your favorite art work(s), artist(s)?
I think it would be Jeff Koons because he’s not what people would assume a typical artist would be. He has procured a craft with out using his hands like a painter or a sculptor, but understood human desire at that moment in time. Which has now given him enormous influence that many people would call “clout”. He is not in the art of art. He is in the art of business. And that is very modern and fascinating.
7. What are the best responses you have had to your work?
I have had all kinds of responses to my work from liking it, loving it, to hating it or being apathetic towards it. I know a lot of people who create things don’t like it when others dislike their work, but I think it means more than any of the others.
8. What do you like about your work?
It’s immediateness and its relationship to the consumer culture it incorporates.
9. What advice would you give to other artists?
To keep creating things that you enjoy living with and forget about the things that don’t give yourself meaning.
10. Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?
Still living in LA in a nice house and spending more time at the beach with friends and family.
