Interview with artist Kingsley Nnaemeka Ebunyebe —

 

1. Who are you and what do you do?
Kingsley Nnaemeka Ebunyebe is a sculptor he was born 1986 in Southeast Nigeria. He started his art career from childhood, later went at the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu, where he obtain NCE. And later he went to the University of Nigeria Nsukka, where he also obtain (B.A. in Fine and Applied Art). He just concluded his master’s in sculpture this year. Kingsley is a studio based artist and also he teach art. He has participated in many art exhibitions including Dreams Alive art exhibition, UNN in 2011, Visual Art competition Spanish Embassy in Abuja 2018, Artpoblik Manifesto II 2019, Ibobo Art exhibition 2021, Life in My City Art Competition 2019, 2021 and 2022. etc.

 

 

2. Why art? 
Kingsley believes that every meaningful creation comes from nature, just as creativity is a platform given to man to compensate him for things yet unmade. He fell in love with nature and art. He draw inspiration from the above to frame his works within the context of a visually engaging artworks which lend voices to the social, political and economic atmosphere in Nigeria and the world at large. Art has become to him a vehicle for the recreation, reformation and remaking of already existing ideas which hitherto were lying abstract in our minds.

 

 

3. What is your earliest memory of wanting to be an artist?
Kingsley started art from his childhood, his dream is always to become a great artist.

4. What are your favorite subject(s) and media(s)?
Kingsley favorite subject is sculpture and the media is wood.

 

 

5. How do you work and approach your subject?
Kingsley combined techniques such as carving, knotting, joining, tying, suspending, and bonding. His works comes in three dimensional, installation, and relief.

6What do you like about your work?
The medium, techniques used, forms and the message is addressing. What are your favorite art work(s), artist(s)?

Michaelangelo, Eva Obodo, Obiora Anidi, El Anatsui and so on.

 

 

7. What are the best responses you have had to your work?
Exhibiting in an important exhibition and selling works.

8. What do you like about your work?
The medium, techniques used, forms and the message is addressing.

 

 

9. What advice would you give to other artists?
To continue speaking through their art works.

 

 

10. Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?
International art exhibitions and having my works in renown galleries, museums and all over the world.
