Mats Andersson — ARTIST

Interview with artist Mats Andersson —

1. Who are you and what do you do?
I am Mats Andersson, and I am an artist.

2. Why art?
For me, creating is both intuitive and emotional – a kind of dialogue between colour, movement and feeling. I often work with music in the background, and let the rhythms influence how the brush moves across the canvas. As much as the nature in Kullabygden inspires me – the light, the landscape, and the stillness – the music and the mood of the moment also influence how a work develops.
My artistic journey began with a whim: one day, I bought watercolor paper and drove to the coast. I sat down in Strandbaden and painted a sunset, realizing that I wanted something more. Only a few years later, together with my wife, I built a house exactly where the first painting was created. Since then, art has become my life. Twenty-five years later, it remains just as vibrant. Today, my work is exhibited in both Sweden and internationally in cities such as New York, London, Montreal, Berlin, Amsterdam, Florence, and Oslo. I am represented in private collections throughout Europe and North America.

Locally, I have recently opened Galleri StudioMA in Nyhamnsläge, in the old post office, where I show my works and invite people to meet with the art. One of the rooms, the old bank vault, is particularly exciting. There, it feels like something new can take shape.

3. What are your favorite subject(s) and media(s)?
My paintings are abstract and often full of energy. I want them to give something back to the viewer – energy, maybe a smile, but also an opening to the imagination. Often, the process begins without a clear plan. I lay out a canvas on the floor, mix paint, experiment with pasty and transparent surfaces, thin lines, layer upon layer – and follow what happens. For me, it’s about capturing a movement, a light, a feeling in the moment.

I work in mixed media, where acrylic, spray, and epoxy resin meet in a unique visual language that over time has become my signature. There is a playfulness in it, but also a seriousness – I want to constantly challenge myself and my expressions. Not to get stuck. That’s where I find joy.

4. And how do I know when a work is finished?
That’s when I can sit in front of it for a long time – and a calm sets in.
