Skytone — MUSICIANS
Interview with the band Skytone —
1. Who are you and what do you do?
We are a band of brothers! Two to be exact , Darius and Rodney Doddridge, and we write music and record albums and have been doing this for quite awhile. We call ourselves Skytone.
We have a couple of new releases we are excited about. One is an EP entitled “Beach Ball and the Silver Frog” released this summer that is kind of music you should put on when you are enjoying a beautiful hot day in the middle of summer. If not then listen to it and imagine being there.
The other is a live album that was an exlcusive show we put on with a select invite and with fish flown in from up north and albums to give away. The
show was such a success we turned it into a new live album.
We have a full length we are working on every spare moment we have that is looking at this point will have 13 new songs. This will be our first full length album in awhile and we will be playing shows and getting it out there in 2016!
2. Why music?
We love painting and writing but music perhaps gives us the most artist fulfillment as you can tell a story, play instruments, sing and have people sing along and you can even paint your own album cover.
3. What is your earliest memory of wanting to be involved in music?
Hearing our parents practicing for a gig in our living room when we really little, singing with full on harmony Eleanor Rigby and wishing they would stop because it was so sad but then not really wanting it to stop.
4. What are your favorite subject(s) and style(s)?
Harmony, harmony and more harmony. And give me a good hook and a chorus! Folk but with a lot of pop in it.
5. How do you work and approach a new piece that you are working on?
I find its best not to over think it. If you really really want to write a good song chances are you won’t. The best ones seem to surprise you.
6. Who are your favorite musician(s), singer(s)?
Well if you haven’t checked out Nick Danger and the Danger City Rebels then do so…they also have released under the band name the Social Icons both on the same label as us which is the beautiful music label – www.thebeautifulmusic.com We tend to like singers and bands that write their own music and have more than one singer. Seems like it was more popular way to go in the 60’s and 70’s but it’s also coming around again a little. Back in the day you had Simon and Garfunkel and The Beach Boys. Now bands like First Aid Kit, also Blue Rodeo and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are some that come to mind.
7. What are the best responses you have had to your work?
My father in law calling everyone at midnight he knows on the phone to listen to a song we posted.
8. What do you like about your work?
That it’s not work
9. What advice would you give to other musicians?
If you’re trying to make a living at it, do it because you love it and it makes you happy. If it becomes not fun then do it as a hobby and keep it fun.
10. Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?
Looking at my gold record hanging on the wall. In our case it will just be a regular record we dipped in gold!
