Theodoros Kagias — ARTIST
Interview with artist Theodoros Kagias —
Who are you and what do you do?
I am Theodoros Kagias. I was born in 1980, in Thessaloniki, Greece. I paint since my childhood. In the age of 8, I had my first painting lessons in my uncle’s, Konstantinos Georgiadis, atelier. Generally, I grew up in an artistic environment. My grandfather Nikolaos Georgiadis was a painter (Byzantine art) and my father Alexandros Kagias as well. I graduated from the Fine Arts School in Aristotle University in Thessaloniki where I studied painting and woodcut for 5 years.
Why art?
Painting is an expression of feelings. I try to show myself through that and I don t care about anything else. The subject has to be an image that will create an emotion in me in that particular moment. About people, a strange look can catch my eye or the atmosphere of the place someone stands in.
What are your favorite art work(s), artist(s)?
Many are the painters that I like. During different periods in my life, I have different favorite painters. Right now, a painter that I take a closer look at the Russian expressionist Anatoly Zverev, Rembrandt and Francisco Goya.
What do you like about your work?
The last two years I teach painting to children at schools. I feel that I am very influenced by them in the way they see things and express themselves. I love so much how the children use the colours, how they paint the people or even how they paint an eye in a face.
I also love cinema very much, also. Especially I like film noir. That atmosphere the movies have that can make you travel through time. My recent work is dedicated to film noir, trying to capture favorite scenes and favorite actors, trying to paint the mystery.
