“Poor Man’s” Copyright
Put a cd, dvd or piece of sheet music (any hard form of your work that can be listened to, watched, read, etc) into a secure padded envelope and address it to yourself.
At the Post Office, ask the desk clerk not to actually send the mail, but to stamp the date and their postal information over the seal of the envelope.
You will be charged as if you were sending the item through the physical mail, based on weight and size. Take the envelope home and put it in a safe place with your postal receipt.
Do NOT open the envelope!!! This is key! While some lawyers say this method may not work in a court of law, the package you have now serves as your copyright.
If and when someone tries to steal or duplicate your works without permission, you can take the unopened package to the courts, show them the date stamp and official US postal seal, and then proceed to open and reveal your work(s). This can help you prove that not only is the work yours, but it helps clarify a timeframe of creation, since the work(s) would have had to of been created before the date on the seal.
