Velko Geurgevich – ARTIST
Interview with artist Velko Geurgevich
1. Who are you and what do you do?
I am Velko Geurgevich, a professional Realist painter living and working in Belgrade, Serbia.
2. Why art?
I always had a feeling art chose me, like it was other way around. Art is a universal language that enables me to communicate with the world on a deep, fundamental level.
3. What is your earliest memory of wanting to be an artist?
Drawing was in my blood, since my earliest memories. I remember one summer break I just started drawing, and I haven’t stopped ever since!
4. What are your favorite subject(s) and media(s)?
I prefer large landscape oils. Though it is important to keep things fresh and stay flexible, by occasionally changing subject matter, size and media.
5. How do you work and approach your subject?
I plan elaborate expeditions, camping for weeks in European national parks. I make thousands of photos and later slowly select 2-3 most significant ones in my studio. I combine these with field studies and memories, impressions, to create a work of art, a living, breathing eco system.
6. What are your favorite art work(s), artist(s)?
Since I live between East and the West, I relate well to different artist sensibilities. I love Velazquez, Vermeer, Rembrandt equally as 19th century Russian masters.
7. What are the best responses you have had to your work?
I will quote one of my collectors when he received my first painting: “Got your painting back from the framers, I cannot express the happiness it gives me. Watching the sun rise and set as the lighting changes is something to behold… it feels as it is alive- a tiny biosphere enclosed by a frame. You have an incredible talent – thank you so much for sharing it with me.”
8. What do you like about your work?
I love the fact that I spend so much time being focused on nature, and trying to recreate its ethereality and energy. It is a life-long inspiration…
9. What advice would you give to other artists?
Be persistent, stay true to yourself, be open and kind. Find your own niche and style, be consistent and professional.
10. Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?
Hopefully similar to where I’m at now; In nature, painting various exciting paintings, traveling & doing extreme sports with my family.
“I am a Zen-scape painter, inhaling Nature, exhaling Art.”
