Interview with artist Victoria Isabel Martín —

1. Who are you and what do you do?
I am Victoria Isabel Martín, 43 years old, and I am Spanish, from Madrid. I like to say I am a maker. I make sculptures with clay and various materials.

2. Why art? 
Art encompasses all aspects of life. I love a phrase that interprets this thought very well – “Find art in everything.” All aspects of life I see through art in a creative way.

3. What is your earliest memory of wanting to be an artist?
I was not aware of what it was to be artist. I only had a strong creative impulse. Since I was a very little girl. I come from a very humble family. There was no budget for art supplies. This made my imagination sharpen. Any place was good to channel my creativity. Walls, book margins, floor, any blank space I could draw on, every day utensil was a great opportunity to transform it into something artistic.

4. What are your favorite subject(s) and media(s)?
I create figures, these Robots, these little characters that I make with Sculpey polymer clay, they help me convey emotions. I love the contrast of something inanimate (a machine) can be tender and convey feelings. It’s so fun for me.

5. How do you work and approach your subject?
My ideas always come up randomly. I am always imagining and dreaming. I imagine it and I do it. Sometimes I draw it beforehand. But always write down all my ideas in notebooks. Because they are like sparks.

6. What are your favorite art work(s), artist(s)?
It would be so difficult to sum up all artists that I admire. I’ve always loved Impressionists. I love Gustave Caillebotte, Charles Courtney Curran, Edgar Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec. When I was young I was obsessed with Paul Gauguin and Gustav Klimt. I love Tamara De Lempicka, and  Lucian Freud fascinates me. I remember being very small (7 or 8 years) the deep impression that it was to see an exhibition of Picasso on his blue time. My heart  “exploded .”

7. What are the best responses you have had to your work?
A client from Japan wrote to me during confinement. He had bought several pieces from me, and told me that looking at the figures, during these hard times made him smile. I have sold my work all over the world, in very different places and cultures. But everyone has agreed in his answer. My work has made them smile and feel good. This is amazing for me.

8. What do you like about your work?
I am passionate about the process of creation. Since I dream an idea and carry it out to 3D it’s something magical to be able to transmit your emotions through your creations.

9. What advice would you give to other artists?
I always say that never stop creating. Let creativity flow and see where it takes you.

10. Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?
I have not the remotest idea.. But surely dreaming and creating.
